PM modi sri lanka visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Sri Lanka on Friday (4 April 2025) on a three -day visit. Hundreds of local people and members of the Indian migrant community gave a grand welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Colombo despite heavy rains. PM Modi has arrived here on a state visit from Bangkok at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayake.
PM welcomes at Colombo International Airport
Sri Lankan External Affairs Minister Vijita Herath, Health Minister Nalinda Jayatisa, Labor Minister Anil Jayanta, Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrashekhar, Women and Child Affairs Minister Saroja Savitri Paulraj and Science and Technology Minister Krisantha Abesena, including top ministers of the Cabinet, welcomed Prime Minister Modi at the International Airport of Colomboes. During this time, people kept waiting for a glimpse of PM Modi outside the airport amid heavy rains in the capital of Sri Lanka.
Prime Minister Modi has arrived directly on a visit to the island country after attending the Bays Bay of Bengal Multi -sector Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) summit in Bangkok. He will return home on 6 April. After reaching Colombo, Prime Minister Modi wrote on X, “I have reached Colombo. I am grateful to ministers and dignitaries welcoming me at the airport. I am waiting for the programs to be held in Sri Lanka.”
Emphasis on promoting bilateral partnership
Colombo has said that his first foreign trip as the President of Sri Lanka was a significant moment in bilateral relations as the President of Sri Lanka in December last year. Strong diplomatic relations between the two neighbors are expected to be further promoted. PM Modi will be the first foreign leader to come to his hospitality after taking over as the President of Sri Lanka.
During the visit of Prime Minister Modi, there is also expected of an agreement on defense cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. During the visit, the Prime Minister will discuss with the President of Sri Lanka and review the progress made in the areas of cooperation in the joint approach to promote the partnership for the shared future of the Sri Lankan President to promote partnership.
Expect compromise in many areas including defense, health
The Prime Minister will also hold a meeting with senior dignitaries and political leaders. There will also be many agreements related to energy contact, digitization, defense, health and multi-regional grant aid between the two leaders. Prime Minister Modi will also meet other political leaders of the country before visiting Anuradhapura with Disanayake for the inauguration of Indian financial assistance development projects on Sunday (6 April 2025).
In Anuradhapura, the two leaders will offer Shraddha Suman in the historic Jaya Sri Mahabodhi temple complex. Prime Minister Modi also visited this temple during his visit to Sri Lanka in 2015, which has special significance in India-Sri Lanka civilized partnership. Prime Minister Modi then visited Sri Lanka again in 2019. During their discussions, the two leaders will also discuss all the issues related to fishermen, including early release and repatriation of Indian fishermen and fishing boats.
Many issues including release of fishermen will be discussed
The Government of India says that it has given top priority to the safety, safety and welfare of Indian fishermen and is continuously raising these issues through bilateral mechanisms, diplomatic channels and various official negotiations, including the Prime Minister’s recent meeting with the President of Sri Lanka on 16 December 2024. India has repeatedly requested the Sri Lankan government to see the issue of fishermen as a issue related to human and livelihood and should not use force under any circumstances.
