Explainer: Even after the defeat in Melbourne, India can reach the WTC 2025 Final, understand the equation, how will this be possible?

New Delhi. After the defeat in the fourth match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, the Indian team’s hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final have suffered a major blow. However, Team India is still not out of the race. If the equation fits, Rohit Sharma’s team may get a chance to play the final. It is another matter that now India’s victory alone will not suffice; India will have to depend on the results of the other team.

India’s hopes of reaching the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final have suffered a major setback after their 185-run defeat in the Boxing Day Test against Australia. With this defeat, the Rohit Sharma-led team has fallen 2-1 behind in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). Now the final Test match will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) from January 3.

South Africa confirmed its place

The New Year Test match will be India’s last match of the 2023-25 WTC and their hopes of reaching the final are now very slim. After winning the first Test match against Pakistan, South Africa has confirmed its place in the final to be held at Lord’s next year. India is competing for second place with Australia and Sri Lanka.

How can India qualify?

Despite a 3-0 defeat to New Zealand and trailing 2-1 in the series, the two-time finalists still have a chance to reach the final. However, now India will not be able to do this work only on the basis of its victory. After the Sydney Test, all the matches of this season of the World Test Championship of the Indian team will end. Australia will play a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka next month. India will have to win the Sydney Test against Australia to keep alive its hopes of reaching the finals. If they draw or lose at SCG, their hopes will be dashed.

If India wins the Sydney Test, they will qualify for the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final. Provided that Sri Lanka beats Australia 2-0 or 1-0. If the series is drawn 0-0 then India will also reach the final. If the series is drawn 1-1 or Australia wins 2-0 or 1-0, then India will not be able to qualify for the final.
