Brief History of China and Taiwan
Before the communist revolution led by Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong, China was briefly a democratic nation. At that time it was known as the Republic of China (now the official name of Taiwan). The Republic of China was established in 1912 after the fall of the Qing dynasty. Following the Communist Revolution in 1949, Communist China emerged under the leadership of Mao Zedong and the Nationalist Government (Kuomintang) came to power in Taiwan. By 1971, the United Nations recognized Taiwan as the legitimate government of China. Subsequently, the People’s Republic of China (China) received this recognition and Taiwan was crypto-politically isolated.
