Before the Bihar assembly elections to be held later this year, the Election Commission has intensified preparations to make the election process easier and transparent. In this series, the Central Election Commission has started three new initiatives to make voter lists more accurate and reliable. Their aim is to make the voting process easier and reliable for the people.
The Central Election Commission has taken 3 new initiatives keeping in mind the updating of the voter list and improving it as well as making the polling process more for the citizens. These decisions were taken in the meeting of Chief Electoral Officers held in March 2025, in which Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi were present.
‘First decision is related to data of death registration’
In the three important decisions taken by the Election Commission, the first decision is related to the data of death registration. Under this, now the Election Commission will get a record of the dead people from the Registrar General of India directly in an electronic way. This will ensure that election registration officers i.e. ERO can get timely information about registered deaths. With this, the booth level officer (BLO) will also be able to verify the information through field visit without waiting for a formal request under Form 7. This will ensure that the names of the dead are removed from the voter list on time.
‘Decision to change the design of voter information slip’
Apart from this, the Election Commission has decided to change its design to make the voter information slip (VIS) more transparent and easier. Voter’s serial number and part number will now be seen in big font, which will make the voters find it easier to find out their polling station. Also, the work of finding the names of voters in the voter list for election officials will be easy.
Along with these two decisions, the Election Commission has also done the work to ensure that people can easily identify the block level officer i.e. BLO. Now every BLO will be given a standard photo identity card so that when they go door-to-door to meet voters, people can easily identify them and interact with them without any doubt. According to the Election Commission, all these steps have been taken among the voters to increase their trust, transparency and convenience regarding the election process.
