The conference has started from Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas on 8th January.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Conference in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, on Thursday. This year the theme of the conference is ‘Contribution of Overseas Indians to Developed India’.

During this, the chief guest, President of Trinidad and Tobago, Christine Carla Kangaloo will address the conference virtually. Modi will flag off the inaugural journey of Pravasi Bharatiya Express remotely.

This is a special tourist train for Indian expatriates, which will run from Nizamuddin Railway Station in Delhi and will go to many tourist places for three weeks. It is being operated under the Overseas Pilgrimage Darshan Scheme of the Ministry of External Affairs.

However, the conference has started from Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas on 8th January. During this, Newsweek CEO and co-founder Dev Pragad was the chief guest. Newsweek is an American weekly news magazine. More than 3 thousand delegates from 70 countries have reached Odisha for the programme.

This conference will continue till January 10. President Draupadi Murmu will attend its concluding session and present the Pravasi Bharatiya Award.

When and what will happen in the 3 day conference…

  • 8th January The conference will begin with the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas event, which is being organized by the Government of Odisha in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
  • 9 January Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the conference. He will flag off the Pravasi Bharatiya Express. Modi will also inaugurate four exhibitions. These include the legacy of the Ramayana, technology and the contribution of the diaspora to developed India, the development of the Indian diaspora from Mandvi to Muscat and the heritage and culture of Odisha.
  • 10 January President Draupadi Murmu will preside over the concluding session of the programme. President Murmu will also give Pravasi Bharatiya Samman to many NRIs.

Foreign Ministry Secretary Arun Kumar Chatterjee said – the number of Indian expatriates is 35.4 million, which includes 19.5 million people of Indian origin and 15.8 million NRIs. Maximum 2 million people of Indian origin live in America. Whereas UAE has the highest number of NRIs at 3.5 million.

Jaishankar said- PM Modi changed his approach to work Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said in the Youth Migrant Day Conference on January 8 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi changed the way governments work. He has given the country an attitude from ‘chalta hai’ to ‘how will it not happen’.

Jaishankar highlighted the role of India’s young generation in driving global development. He shared a memory of badminton player PV Sindhu. He said that Sindhu had called the PM a youth icon. Sindhu had said that PM Modi has given the country an attitude from ‘chalta hai’ to ‘how will it not happen’.

Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee started in 2003 The Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan was started by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in January 2003. It was started to commemorate the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa in 1915. The purpose of celebrating this day is to recognize the contributions and achievements of NRIs.

So far this conference has been organized in cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Chennai, Varanasi, Bengaluru and Indore. It was done on virtual mode during the Covid pandemic in 2021.

The conference is based on ‘Purvodaya’ scheme Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is being organized for the first time in the eastern part of the country. Its objective is to take forward the ‘Purvodaya’ scheme of the government. This scheme has been made for the development of states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.

Indian diaspora from South-East Asian countries has shown considerable interest in participating in the programme. Natives of Kerala, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh are prominent among the NRIs registering to participate in the program.
