The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) figures show that more than 71,000 murder cases were registered in Bihar from 2001 to 2022. Most of the murder was done in 2004 when 3,948 such cases were reported. At that time there was a government of RJD, Congress and Left parties in the state and Chief Minister was Rabri Devi.

After Nitish Kumar became the Chief Minister in 2005, there was a decrease in murder cases in the early years, but then the process rose again and in 2012 the number of murders reached 3,566. However, the lowest 2,581 cases were registered in 2016. In 2022, this figure again rose to 2,930.

More murders in personal enmity

The reasons for the murder are also attention. Out of the total killings in 2022, the reason was personal enmity in 804 cases. 535 murders took place due to land dispute, 412 financial reasons, and 261 family quarrels. Only 8 murders were recorded for political reasons.

In 2022, a total of 2,958 people became the victims of murder, including 2,340 men, 618 women, and 68 minor (38 boys and 30 girls).
