General Google Search Statistics
1. Google Processes 9.5 Million Searches Every Minute
Google sees more than 5 trillion search queries annually, which averages out to 9.5 million searches per minute.
On a per-person basis (assuming the United Nations has the most recent global population estimate at 8.2 billion people), this translates to every person conducting about 610 searches each year.
2. Top-Ranking Organic Search Results See a 22.4% Click-Through Rate
Anyone familiar with SEO already understands the value of achieving a high position in Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs).
And the stats speak for themselves. Our 2023 data shows that the average click-through rate (CTR) is 22.4% for position 1, 13% for position 2, and 10% for position 3 on mobile.
It’s important to take this number with a grain of salt. Because search results look much different now—particularly for queries that show AI Overviews (AIOs).
This means it’s reasonable to assume that CTRs have changed.

3. Google’s Search Index Is Over 100,000,000 GB in Size
Every time you perform a search, Google scours hundreds of billions of webpages stored in its index to return relevant results.
This index is built through Google’s web crawlers, which systematically move from webpage to webpage via links. And make records of what they find.
And since content on the web is always changing, Google’s crawlers are constantly at work to ensure the data in the index stays up to date.
4. Over 60% of Searches Occur on Mobile Devices in the U.S.
Desktop devices no longer account for the majority of searches. And Google has updated its systems accordingly.
In October 2023, Google confirmed that its switch to mobile-first indexing was finally complete. In other words, Google now crawls and indexes pages from the perspective of a mobile browser.
This means mobile webpages must be optimized to perform well in search results.
5. Almost 27% of Google’s Desktop Traffic Comes from the U.S.
The U.S. accounts for more Google desktop visits than any other country.
India is in second place, accounting for 4.51% of visits. And Brazil comes in third, at 4.37%.
6. The Most Googled Terms in 2025 Are ‘YouTube,’ ‘ChatGPT,’ & ‘Facebook’
The term “youtube” receives almost 1.4 billion monthly searches globally, according to Semrush data collected in February 2025.
Meanwhile, “chatgpt” and “facebook” receive approximately 618 million monthly searches each.
(Semrush, 2025)
7. Most Google Search Queries Are 3 to 4 Words Long
The average length of a search query in the U.S. is 3.4 words. Which is a slight increase from about 3.3 two years ago.
In the U.K., the average query length is closer to 3.2 words. In Germany, it’s a bit lower.
AI-Focused Google Search Statistics
8. AI Overviews Appear for 13.14% of Google Searches
AI Overviews are a SERP feature that now appear for 13.14% of all searches, based on Semrush data from March 2025.
This portion has increased over time—AI Overviews were only showing for 6.49% of queries in January 2025.
(Semrush, 2025)
9. Google’s AI Overviews List an Average of 5 Sources
AI Overviews link to about five sources per query, according to a study of over 400,000 searches.
Of the sources mentioned in AIOs, 52% also appear in the top 10 organic search results.
This indicates there’s an opportunity for sources that aren’t on the first page to gain more visibility.
And given what we know about how Google’s Navboost system rewards positive user interactions, any sources listed in AI Overviews that don’t already rank on the first page may be able to climb closer to page 1 if users find the content valuable.
10. Circle to Search Is Available on 200 Million Devices
Google’s Circle to Search feature that’s available for certain Android phones lets users circle, highlight, or tap anything (images, videos, or text) on their mobile screens to initiate a Google search.
It’s now available on 200 million Android devices. And users who have tried the feature go on to use it to start 10% of their searches.
This feature is blurring the lines between different types of search. And stands to make search experiences more seamless.
11. Google’s Global Traffic Declined 7.91% After ChaptGPT’s Release
We worked with Statista to compare search engine traffic following ChatGPT’s release and found that Google’s global traffic decreased 7.91% from 2023 to 2024.
Other search engines saw similar declines. But AI- and privacy-focused search engines actually saw increases.
(Semrush, 2024)

(Semrush, 2022)
