In the PNB scam case of more than 13 thousand crores, the difficulties of Fugitive Nirav Modi’s brother Nehal Deepak Modi have increased further. US officials have arrested him on the demand of the Government of India. Nehal Modi is accused that he deliberately hidden evidence in the Nirav Modi scam, threatened witnesses and played an active role in hiding the money and properties related to the scam.
According to investigative agencies, when the investigation started in India, Nehal took 50 kg of gold from FIRESTAR DIAMOND FZE company in Dubai and disappeared. He himself was monitoring this entire process and was trying to delete all the necessary records, accounts and data from his employees.
50 crore jewelery etc. took possession from Hong Kong
Apart from this, Nehal Modi also captured Diamond Jewelery of about $ 6 million (about Rs 50 crore) from Hong Kong, 150 box beads and 3.5 million dirham cash and 50 kg gold from Dubai. He carried out all this along with one of his companions Mihir Bhansali.
According to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Nehal not only removed physical evidence but also destroyed digital evidence like mobile phones and servers. All the digital data in Dubai was completely abolished.
India demands extradition from America
Not only this, Nehal Modi intimidated some witnesses to Cairo, where his passports were confiscated and signed on false documents, in a case, Nehal asked a witness to give a fake testimony in Europe’s court by giving a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to a witness.
ED says that Nehal Modi has committed crime by being involved in money laundering under Section 3 of PMLA, and he should be punished under Section 4. The Government of India had officially demanded the extradition of Nehal Modi, on which action has now been taken by the US, it is expected that the process of bringing Nehal Modi to India will start in the coming days.
Next hearing on extradition will be held on 17 July
The next hearing in Nehal Modi’s extradition case has been set on 17 July 2025, which will have a ‘status conference’. During this time, a bail petition can also be filed by Nehal Modi, which will be opposed by the US prosecution. This arrest is not only a strategic achievement for India’s investigating agencies, but it will also strengthen the process of reaching the bottom of the PNB scam and bringing the culprits into the grip of law.
Red corner notice was released in 2019
Significantly, in 2019, Interpol issued a red corner notice against Nehal Modi. Earlier, interpol notices have also been issued against his brother Nirav Modi and Nishal Modi. Nehal is a Belgian citizen and was born in Antwerp. He knows English, Hindi and Gujarati languages.
Nirav Modi is already lodged in Britain’s jail and the process of extradition is also going on. Nirav Modi and his maternal uncle Mehul Choksi are the main criminals of the PNB scam, in which the bank suffered a loss of more than Rs 13,000 crore.
