A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, behind which the thinking of a senior judge of the Supreme Court and the organization headed by him is attached. This petition has been filed by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) for the release of old and seriously ill prisoners. The current president of Nalsa is Justice BR Gavai, the senior -most judge of the Supreme Court.
Nalsa has said that it is against international human rights principles to maintain very old or severely sick prisoners in jail. Many of these people do not get proper medical help according to their age or disease. It is also against Article 14 of the Constitution (Fundamental Rights of Equality) and 21 (Fundamental Rights of Life).
Actually, on the occasion of Human Rights Day on 10 December 2024, NALSA started a campaign for the release of old and sick prisoners. Under this campaign, a committee has been formed to try to release the old and sick prisoners by creating a committee at the district, state and national level, by giving them legal help.
Petition filed in the Supreme Court is also a part of these efforts of NALSA. NALSA member secretary SC Mungate has decided to file it after discussion with the National Committee. An early hearing on this petition is expected.
20.8 percent of the prisoners in India are over 50 years of age. Many of these people have spent a lot of time in jail. Nalsa has stated that it keeps trying through the Under Trial Review Committee of every state for the release of seriously ill -related prisoners above 70 years of age. & Nbsp;
