Aadhaar with Voter ID Card Link Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar will Meeting with Home Ministry Officials and Law Department

Election Commission Meeting: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dnyanesh Kumar will hold a meeting with the Secretaries of the Union Home Ministry and the Law Department on 18 March to add Aadhaar with the voter ID card. Election Commission officials gave this information.

According to the report of Hindustan Times, this high-level meeting is going to be held by the Chief Election Commissioner on March 4-5 after the instructions given to the Chief Electoral Officers of all states and union territories, in which he said that all efforts should be made to connect the voter lists with Aadhaar.

Opposition has been questioning the Election Commission
Several allegations have been made by the opposition parties about fraud and duplicate voter ID cards in voter ID cards. Opposition leaders have several times accused the Election Commission of coordinating with the interests of the central government. According to the report, the Election Commission had earlier planned to make the Aadhaar-Voter ID connection effectively compulsory, although in its submission submitted to the Supreme Court later in 2023, the panel said that such linking was not mandatory.

‘Form 6-B is not written that it is mandatory to give Aadhaar’
An official said on the condition of anonymity, ‘It is not written anywhere in Form 6-B that it is mandatory to give Aadhaar but the voter has no option to say that I have an Aadhaar number but I will not give it. The ECI spoke to the Law Ministry about this but left no scope to make it voluntary. If this was the case then why would people give Aadhaar ‘.

What did Law Minister Kiren Rijiju say
Officials said that a comprehensive consultation was done before amending the law to connect Aadhaar with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the Law Ministry. Law Minister Kiren Rijiju had told Parliament that the registration can tell the officers to tell the officers their Aadhaar number using Form 6B in the voter list under Rule 26-B of the Voter Registration (Amendment) Rules 2022.

Election officials say that the main function of the linkage is to eliminate duplicate voter ID cards which is a problem that has complicated the electoral management of India.

According to sources, the Aadhaar linkage issue is also likely to be discussed in the upcoming meetings between the officials of the Election Commission and representatives of political parties.
