India’s legendary table tennis player Achant Sharat Kamal Retirement has been announced. The WTT Contender Tournament, which is going to be held in Chennai this month, will be the last tournament of his professional career. The World Table Tennis (WTT) tournament will be played from 25 to 30 March.
Achant is sorry for not winning the Olympic medal
42 -year -old Sharat Kamal said, ‘I played my first international tournament in Chennai and will also play in Chennai. This will be my last tournament as professional player. I have won medals in Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. I could not win the Olympic medal. Hopefully, I will be able to fulfill my dream through the upcoming young talents.
Achant Sharat Kamal has won seven gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, while two bronze in the Asian Games. He also won four bronze medals in the Asian Table Tennis Championship. Achant also attended the Paris Olympics last year, who was his fifth Olympic as a player.
Achant Sharat Kamal is ideal for young players who want to make table tennis a career. Achant, who belongs to Chennai, made headlines by winning the National Championship of Table Tennis in 2003. He then won the individual gold medal of the 16th Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship held in Kuala Lumpur in 2004. Then he proved his superiority once again by winning two gold medals at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
He was the only Indian table tennis player to participate in the 2008 Beijing Olympics individual event. He then won the US Table Tennis Championship held in Michigan in 2010. In the same year, Achant along with Shubhazit Saha at the Delhi Commonwealth Games also succeeded in winning the gold of Mains Doubles.
Later at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Achant also won three medals including one gold. He won 10 national titles, which is a record. He is still the best Indian male player in the World Table Tennis rankings. According to the latest WTT rankings, he is currently ranked 42nd. Sharat Kamal is 18 places above Manav Thakkar. In the year 2022, Sharat Kamal was awarded the Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna Award, the country’s highest sports honor.
