Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar submitted his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu on Monday (July 21, 2025). Citing Article 67 (a) of the Constitution, he said that he wants to prioritize his health care as per medical advice. His term was till August 2027, but on the very first day of the monsoon session of Parliament, he decided to step down.

Health was slowly deteriorating
Although while chairing the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar was always energetic and active, but his health was deteriorating for the last few months. In March, he had to be admitted to AIIMS in Delhi due to health related problems. After this, on the advice of doctors, he limited journeys outside the national capital.

Fainted during the program in Nainital in June
He suddenly fainted on stage during a visit to Kumaon University in Nainital, Uttarakhand in June. Officials said that there was more heat that day and there was more crowd in the auditorium. When the Vice President’s sudden unconscious, his security officer immediately stopped him, which averted a major accident.

Weakness also appeared in Kerala tour
Earlier this month, Dhankhar’s health also appeared critical on the Kerala tour. He was seen walking with the help of his wife Sudesh and a colleague. This clearly indicated that their health is not improving. On July 17, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Dhankhar also felt unhealthy while visiting the ‘Vatika’ developed by Saxena. His wife immediately gave him water, after which he became normal in some time.

Written in resignation- I am taking this decision following medical advice
In his resignation sent to the President, Dhankhar wrote, ‘I resign from the post of Vice President of India under Article 67 (a) of the Constitution, giving priority to health care and following medical advice.’

Had charge in August 2022
Jagdeep Dhankar took over as the 14th Vice President of India in August 2022. His term was scheduled till August 2027. But due to continuous deteriorating health and medical consultation, he left this responsibility ahead of time.
