Air Canadian flight attendant strikes, hundreds of flights canceled

Airline’s 10,000 flight attendants in Canada have been on strike since morning (August 16, 2025), with which Air Canada said that it has canceled more than 600 flights this week and there is a possibility of cancellation of flights.

In fact, this month the attendants were negotiating on a new labor contract and the conversation failed, after which Air Canada requested the federal government to intervene under a provision of Canada’s Labor Act, which gives the Employment Minister the right to mediation for a third party. The attendant opposed the move of Air Canada, which caused the Canada Airline to strike.

It is necessary to come together for conversation

Canadian Employment Minister Patty Hajdu said in a statement late on Friday (August 15, 2025) before the strike started, the two sides should come together for talks. He said, ‘It is unacceptable that there has been so little progress.’

At the same time, according to Hug Poliut, spokesperson for the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the strike means that most of the flights of Air Canada, including international flights, will remain closed. Air Canada has said that it will exclude the attendants from the airports.

Two essential aspects of Air Canada dispute

Poliut further stated that the disputes that have come up during the conversation are double. The first controversy is associated with the demand for operations, in which their salary should be equal to small domestic competitors like Air Transat and Porter Airlines. At the same time, the second dispute is connected to the ground pay, in which the salary that is given to the attendants when they are not working during the flight and the Air Canada does not do so.

According to Hugh Poliut, a new attendant from Air Canada gets about three-fourths of salary of attendants with similar experience in Air Transat. At the same time, due to lack of ground on the ground, the salary per hour is half or it becomes less.

1,30,000 passengers affected per day due to strike

The airline said in a press release that its decision will affect 1,30,000 passengers per day. Air Canada is mostly served at more than 180 airports in Canada, US and abroad. Air Canada says that it operates flights to more than 50 American airports in the US. At the same time, there is a movement of about 430 flights between the two countries. According to Canadian government data, around 7,14,000 US residents took service to Canada last month.
