The MiG-21 aircraft called the ‘backbone’ of the Indian Air Force will retire on Friday. Fighter jet will be bid farewell to Chandigarh Airbase. After this, the services of the aircraft will end officially.

Air Force Chief AP Singh will take the last flight with 6 jets of 23 squadron at the farewell ceremony. Squadron leader Priya Sharma will also participate in the flypast. In 1963, the aircraft joined the Air Force in Chandigarh itself.

During the 62-year service, Supersonic MiG-21 played an important role in the 1965 Indo-Pak War, 1971 Bangladesh Mukti Sangram, 1999 Kargil War and 2019 Balakot air strike.

It was India’s first supersonic jet i.e. it can fly faster than the speed of voice (332 meters per second). Now Tejas LCA Mark 1A will be included in its place.

The retirement ceremony of MIG-21 will be attended by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, several Defense Ministry officials including the head of the three armies. Jaguar and Tejas fighter jets will also participate.

More than 400 MiG-21 crashed

According to data from the Ministry of Defense, more than 400 MiG-21 aircraft have crashed. More than 200 pilots have been killed in it. For this reason, the fighter plane is called ‘flying coffin’ and ‘Widow maker’.

In 1961, when the matter of purchasing MIG series aircraft between Russia and India came to light in the media, the Ministry of Defense had rejected all these things.

In 1962, the US MP quoted a report that India had purchased MIG aircraft from Russia for 2 squadrons of the Air Force. A year later in April 1963, for the first time in April 1963, the Indian Air Force included Mig-21 of Soviet Russia in its fleet to increase its capacity. From 1967, MIG-21 was given the right to assembled in India to the Indian company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited i.e. HAL.

Mig -21 played a big role in winning us during the 1971 war with Pakistan and Kargil Jung in 1999. In 1996, an Air Force team went to Russia to upgrade MIG-21. After the upgrade, India started getting new ships in 2000.

Battle of 1971: Many of Pakistan’s airbases were destroyed in the MiG-21 attacks. It proved to be the game-changer fighter of that era.

1999 Kargil War: Destroy the enemy’s hideouts on the inaccessible hills. This proved its credibility in fighting at height.

2019 Balakot Strike: Group Captain Abhinandan Vardhman killed the Pakistani F-16 aircraft by blowing up the MiG-21 bison.
