New Delhi. The selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar removed Rohit Sharma from the post of ODI captain. Shubman Gill has been given captaincy in his place. Rohit has made India the winner of the Champions Trophy a few months ago, even after this, everyone is surprised at such a decision. The Champions Trophy final was Rohit’s last match as India’s captain. Now Gill will lead India in preparation for 2027 ODI World Cup. He will get the support of Shreyas Iyer.

After removing Rohit, Agarkar gave a clear message to Rohit and Virat Kohli that they would have to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy so that they will remain in selection. Agarkar said, “I think we had made it clear a year or a few years ago that whenever players are available, they should play domestic cricket. I mean, this is the only way that you can keep yourself sharp and cricket, if you have a long break. Whether it is possible or not with international cricket or not, it will tell time, but if the players are free, they should play domestic cricket.”

Rohit last played a list a tournament in 2018. He could not play the finals due to the ODI series against the West Indies. Virat last played the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2010. In 2013, he captained Delhi in the NKP Salve Trophy. He returned to domestic cricket in January 2025 and played the Ranji Trophy match for Delhi. The ODI series against Australia Virat and Rohit will return to international cricket. He last played for India in the 2025 Champions Trophy final. It remains to be seen whether they will attend the 2027 ODI World Cup plans or not. Three ODIs of India-Australia will be played on 19, 23 and 25 October in Perth, Adelaide and Sydney. After the ODI series, both teams will clash in 5 T20 matches.
