Amit shah hold review meeting in Delhi Regarding Preparations for Upcoming Census

Census 2027: Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a review meeting on Sunday (June 15, 2025) with Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and other senior officials in the review meeting for the upcoming census preparations.

India’s 16th census will be held in 2027, the date of which will be October 2026 in icy areas like Ladakh and March 2027 in the rest of the country. According to an official statement, the notification of census will be published in the government gazette on Monday.

The Home Minister reviewed the preparations for the upcoming census along with the Union Home Secretary, the General Registrar of India and the Census Commissioner Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan and other senior officials. The census will be done in two stages.

Census will be done in two phases
In the first phase, information about each house property and facilities will be collected under ‘Husselisting Operation’ (HLO). This will be followed by the second phase i.e. Population Assessment (PE), in which the count, socio-economic cultural and other information of each person of each house will be collected.

Caste calculation will be done with census
The statement said that caste calculations will also be done in the census. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, about 34 lakh calculations and supervisors and about 1.3 lakh census officers will be deployed for census activities.

When was the last census in India?
The statement said that this census is the 16th census of India and 8th after independence. The last census was done in 2011. The upcoming census will be done through digital medium using mobile applications. Provision of self-killing will also be made available to people. The statement said that very stringent data security measures will be implemented to ensure data security at the time of collection, remittance and storage.
