Chandrababu Naidu on Population: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu recently announced at an event that the state government will allow only those people who have more than two children to participate in the local body elections. CM Naidu said that this policy is being made keeping in mind the decreasing population growth in the state. He said that this step will encourage families to have more children, so that the decline in birth rate can be stopped.
Naidu further said, “There was a time when people with more children were not allowed to participate in Panchayat elections or local body elections. Now I am saying that people with less children cannot contest elections. Only then you can become Sarpanch, Nagar You can become a corporation councillor, corporation president or mayor when you have more than two children.”
Concern over population crisis
Chief Minister Naidu expressed deep concern about the declining birth rate in the country. He specifically warned about North India, saying the region could be in danger of losing its demographic dividend in the coming 15 years. He said that in earlier times people used to raise families with more children, but now families are having fewer children and some are adopting the lifestyle of “double income, no kids”.
He also said, “Your parents gave birth to four-five children, but you reduced it to one. Now even more sensible people are saying double income no kids, we have to enjoy it. If If his parents had also thought like this, he would not have come into this world.”
Need to learn from developed countries
CM Naidu also pointed out that many countries failed to recognize population decline and focused only on economic prosperity and wealth creation. Now, those countries need new people to support their aging populations. He said, “Now those people are needed, we will have to send them there. We are also going to reach the same situation.”
Giving examples of South Korea, Japan and many European countries, Naidu warned that if these countries had not paid attention to their declining population in time, they would not have had to face this problem today.
Need for population management in India
Even in the first week of January, Naidu had expressed concern over the falling birth rate in India. He said that nowadays many couples do not give birth to children because they want to enjoy their wealth and lifestyle. He also said, “Some couples are no longer ready to have children because they want to spend their earned wealth on themselves.”
Naidu said that population management is very important for the future of Andhra Pradesh. He said that if women produce less than two children on average, the population will decrease, whereas if every woman produces more than two children, the population will increase. In October, Naidu also said that India could see a population gain by 2047, as long as the youth segment remains dominant. After this the number of elderly people will increase and this can become a challenge.
