In another case of anti -Sikh riot, former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar will be sentenced today (on Tuesday). Sajjan Kumar was convicted by the Rouse Avenue Court of Delhi on Wednesday.

The 41 -year -old case is related to the murder of 2 Sikhs in Saraswati Vihar during the 1984 anti -Sikh riots. There are more than 3 cases against Sajjan in Delhi riots. They are acquitted in one.

Earlier in December 2018, the double bench of the Delhi High Court found him guilty of committing violence and provoking riot and sentenced to life imprisonment. Currently, Sajjan is serving a sentence in Tihar Jail.

A case was registered against Sajjan Kumar under sections 147, 149, 148, 302, 308, 323, 395, 397, 427, 436, 440 of the IPC on charges of rioting, murder and robbery.

1 November 1984: Jaswant Singh and Tarundeep Singh were killed in Saraswati Vihar. A case was registered against Sajjan Kumar at Punjabi Bagh police station.

16 December 2021: Keeping in view the police investigation, the court had framed charges against Sajjan. Meanwhile, the victim’s lawyer argued, “The lawyer said,” The large crowd entered Saraswati Vihar with a dangerous weapon.

He started looting, arson and sabotage. They were attacking the properties of Sikhs. He was taking revenge for the assassination of Indira Gandhi. The mob attacked Jaswant’s house, killed him and the son. The house was set on fire after the robbery.

12 February 2025: Special Judge Kaveri Baweja ruled- There is enough evidence that Sajjan Kumar was not only involved in the crowd, but was also leading the crowd.

The decision has been postponed first three times In the hearing held on 31 January 2025, the Rouz Avenue Court postponed the verdict on Sajjan Kumar. Earlier, the decision was also postponed on 8 January and 16 December 2024. Both times the Sajjan Kumar, who was closed in Tihar in Tihar’s court, was presented in the court of Special Judge Kaveri Baweja.

In December 2021, Sajjan Kumar had said to face the trial in this case, calling himself innocent. Sajjan Kumar was convicted in the trial. After this, he was ordered to frame charges against him.

After the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, there were riots in Sikh -dominated areas. Thousands of people were killed in it.

Sultanpuri acquitted in riot case, but convicted in 5 Sikhs murder case

  • Five Sikhs were killed and gurdwaras were burnt in Delhi following the 1984 anti -Sikh riots. Sajjan Kumar was found guilty in this case. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court on 17 December 2018.
  • On September 2023, the Rouse Avenue Court acquitted Sajjan Kumar in the murder of 3 people in Sultanpuri, Delhi. In fact, 3 people were killed during the 1984 Sikh riots in Sultanpuri area. Cham Kaur, an important CBI witness in the riots, alleged that Sajjan Kumar was provoking the mob.

  • Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated on 31 October 1984.
  • On the next day i.e. November 1, anti -Sikh riots erupted in many parts of the country including Delhi.
  • According to PTI, only about 2700 people were killed in Delhi. The death toll across the country was around 3500.
  • The GT Nanavati Commission was formed in May 2000 to investigate the riots.
  • On October 24, 2005, the CBI registered a case on the recommendation of the Nanavati Commission.
  • On February 1, 2010, the trial court issued summons to Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, Balwan Khokar, Mahendra Yadav, Captain Bhagmal, Girdhari Lal, Kishan Khok, Maha Singh and Santosh Rani.
  • On April 30, 2013, the court acquitted Sajjan Kumar.
  • The CBI appealed against this in the High Court on July 19, 2013. On July 22, 2013, the High Court issued a notice to Sajjan Kumar.
  • On December 17, 2018, the High Court convicted Sajjan Kumar in the murder of five Sikhs and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
  • 21 years after the riots, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh apologized in Parliament. He had said- whatever happened, his head bowed down with shame.
