Thyroid is a problem in which our thyroid gland is unable to function properly. This can cause many problems in our body, such as weight gain, fatigue, hair loss etc. Diet can play an important role in the management of thyroid. There are some things that can increase the effect of thyroid, so it is important that you consume them in limited quantity.
What can increase thyroid problems?
First, cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, green leafy vegetables) which are gaitrogenic can affect the functionality of the thyroid gland. This effect can be reduced by cooking them well. Especially raw cruciferous vegetables, raw cabbage or radish used in parathas should be avoided.
Secondly, compounds called Isoflavan in soy and its products like soybean, soy oil etc. can be dangerous for thyroid. Options such as cheese, regular dairy milk or almonds, oats milk can be replaced by soy. These options are easily available and are also more nutritious.
Third, stone fruits (eg mango, peach), which have a large seed, should limit into thyroid as they are also gaitrogenic.
Fourth, people using millets such as ragi, sorghum, millet should be cautious in thyroid cases as they can put pressure on the gland; Consumption in moderation is fine. Quinoa, brown rice, oats etc. can be replaced in their place. Gluten can also be a threat to thyroid, especially for those who have autoimmune thyroid. In such a situation, it is better to take a hool grain option instead of wheat products.
Caffeine can also contribute to this problem as it slows down the absorption of thyroid hormones. So avoid tea or coffee on an empty stomach, and can change them with green tea or herbal tea. Eating sweet should also be avoided because high calorie sweets, juices, cakes etc. are difficult to digest, which accumulates fat in the body and increases weight. Instead, use natural sweeteners such as jaggery or natural sweeteners.
Some important tips of thyroid management-
1. Selenium and zinc rich foods (eg Brazilian nuts, eggs, sunflower seeds) improve thyroid function.
2. Probiotics (eg low fat yogurt) keep our digestive system healthy, which is properly absorbed by hormones.
3. Iodine -rich diet, such as iodine salt, eggs, chicken, fish etc., helps in producing hormones.
4. Maintaining vitamin D and B12 at better level is also helpful in thyroid control.
5. It is very important to reduce stress because it promotes hormone imbalance.
