On Friday (August 15, 2025), US President Donald Trump claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him that China would not attack Taiwan until he is President. Now Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry responded to this and said that we can protect ourselves. Taiwan has been facing military and political pressure from China for the last five years. China has often been talking about mixing Taiwan in its region.

According to a report by Reuters, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Kuang-Wai said that his government closely monitors the talks between the US and China. He said, “Taiwan has so much strength that he can protect itself. That is why our country is increasing its self -defense capabilities. Our country is constantly working hard to increase its strength.”
America-Taiwan has no defense treaty
The United States is Taiwan’s most important international supporter and arms supplier. However, there are no formal diplomatic relations between the two countries. There is no defense treaty between the two countries, so if China attacks, Washington is not obliged to help.
However, the United States, which is bound to provide the means of defense to Taiwan as a law and is long maintained on the policy of strategic ambiguity. In such a situation, it is not completely clear whether the US will help Taiwan by using its military strength in that case if any kind of attack on Taiwan is carried out by China.
