AIMIM supremo and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi has made serious allegations against the Election Commission. He posted on X on Friday (June 27, 2025) and said that the Election Commission is implementing NRC secretly in Bihar. To register the name in the voter list, now every citizen will have to prove through documents when and where he was born and also when and where their parents were born.
Owaisi said that according to reliable estimates, only three-fourths of births are registered, most of the government papers have heavy mistakes. People of flood affected Seemanchal region are the poor, they are barely able to eat food twice a day. In such a situation, expecting them that they will have documents of their parents, there is a cruel joke.
‘People’s trust with the Election Commission will weaken’
The AIMIM supremo made serious allegations against the Election Commission and said that the result of this process would be that the large number of poor people of Bihar will be excluded from the voter list. It is the constitutional right of every Indian to recruit your name in the voter list. In 1995, the Supreme Court had raised strict questions on such arbitrary processes. By initiating such action so close to the election, people’s trust with the Election Commission will weaken.
Owaisi told, what is the Election Commission doing?
He told that if your date of birth is before July 1987, then you will have to give a document showing the date of birth and/or place of birth (one of 11). If you are born between 01.07.1987 and 02.12.2004, then you will have to give a document showing your birth proof (date and place) and also give a document of the birth date and birth place of one of your mother or father.
He further informed that if you are born after 02.12.2004, then along with your date of birth and place, you will have to give documents that prove the date and place of both parents. If there is no Indian citizen of the mother or father, then their passport and visa of that time will also have to be given.
‘All kinds of evidence should be accepted for citizenship’
Owaisi said that the Election Commission wants to gather from house to house in one month (June-July). It is almost impossible to do such a process in a fair manner in a state like Bihar which is of a large population and low connectivity. In the Lal Babu Hussain case (1995), the Supreme Court had clearly stated that a person, who is already registered in the voter list, cannot be removed without information and proper process.
It is the responsibility of the Election Commission to show why a person is being considered foreigner. The most important thing, the court also said that there cannot be a limited list of documents to prove citizenship. All kinds of evidence should be accepted.
