In the last few years, the story of Shreyas Iyer in Indian cricket has been constantly to prove critics wrong. First of all, he was stamped by ‘short-ball theory’, but Iyer broke the belief in the 2023 ODI World Cup with the bat and his confidence. In the tournament, where Virat Kohli’s run-machine Avatar and Rohit Sharma’s selfless captaincy were in the discussion, the Mumbai batsman quietly scored 530 runs in 11 matches.
Then came another shock …
Iyer was out of the team during the Test series against England. But he immediately returned to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2024 and gave the IPL title. Even after this, the KKR did not retain him. But Shreyas decided to prove himself again.

IPL 2025 – Career Turning Point
This Mumbai batsman, often considered suitable for T20 cricket, took a very aggressive style by leading Punjab Kings (PBKS). He scored 604 runs in 17 matches, scored with a strike rate of 175.07 and 6 half -centuries. Even though PBKS could not win the title, Iyer proved that he can become a stormy batsman in T20 format too.
Akash Chopra says that if the IPL performance is the measure of selection in the Indian T20 team, then Iyer should get a place in the Asia Cup team.
UAE pitches and Shreyas’s strength
The Asia Cup is to be in the UAE, where the pitches are slow and suited to spinners. In IPL 2025, Iyer scored 171 runs in the middle overs against spinners, with an average of 85.5 and a strike rate of 154.05.
His main rival Tilak Verma, who scored 246 runs, but his strike rate was 131.55 and it fell against Spin till 121.84.
‘Finisher’ Shreyas
Iyer’s biggest achievement in IPL 2025 was to finish the match. In Chepock against Chennai Super Kings, he scored 72 runs off 41 balls and won PBKS.
After this, he scored an unbeaten 87 runs against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier-2 and brought PBKS to the final. On both occasions, he showed that he can chase the target even under pressure.
Battle of place in Team India
Now India’s T20 strategy has been batted completely aggressively. Last year, the team scored the second highest score against Bangladesh and defeated South Africa-England. In such a situation, a calm mind and fast run player is very important in the middle order. Suryakumar Yadav is firm on number-4, the real match is about the place of number-3. Shreyas Iyer’s claim looks much stronger than Tilak Verma.
