The first Asia Cup was held in 1984. On 13 April 1984, Team India defeated their arch-rivals Pakistan and captured the title in the final. In this way Team India won the first Asia Cup. India defeated Pakistan by 54 runs in the final. This victory was also important because without Kapil Dev’s Indian team won the tournament.
In view of the increasing popularity of ODI cricket, the Asia Cup was organized for the first time in Sharjah. The final match was played between India and Pakistan. Team India defeated Pakistan by 54 runs and captured the title. Surinder Khanna Player of the Match was adjudged for the best game. He scored a brilliant 56 runs. During this, he had hit 3 fours and 2 sixes .. India won the toss and decided to bat first. Surinder Khanna and Ghulam Parkar landed at the crease to bat. Both batsmen gave Team India a strict start. After this, Dilip Vengsarkar landed at the crease to bat. But he was dismissed on a personal score of 14 runs.
After Vengsarkar’s dismissal, Sandeep Patil, who came to the crease, took the front. Sandeep and Surinder took the team’s score to 110 runs. But Surinder Khanna was dismissed on this score. Now the entire responsibility had come on Sandeep Patil. In this, Patil got full support of Sunil Gavaskar. Both the players batted brilliantly and after that no wickets were allowed to fall. Team India scored 188 runs after losing 4 wickets in this 46 -over match. Sandeep Patil was not out for 43 runs and Sunil Gavaskar 36 runs.
The Pakistani team, which came out to chase the target of 189 runs, did not have a good start. Team India bowlers kept the grip on Pakistan from the beginning.
