Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh, this country is constantly making some opposite statement against India. Recently, the interim leader Mohammad Yunus gave some such statement about the Siliguri Corridor, which increased the apprehension that Dhaka was not conspiring with China. This corridor is spread over a width of about 22 kilometers, through which the northeastern states of the country join Mainland.
What did Bangladeshi leader say
Yunus recently attended a program in Beijing. There he said- seven states of India… Eastern parts of India… which are called Seven Sisters, these are landlocked areas of India. There is no way to reach the sea. We are the only patron of the sea for this entire region. This can be a chance for Chinese economy. The Bangladesh leader also pulled Nepal and Bhutan in his speech and said that both countries have hydro power. You can use them in your work. And people can go anywhere through Bangladesh because the sea is just behind us.
Dhaka should increase its trade with China, even fine, but he deliberately threatened India’s Siliguri Corridor and threatened in a way that it would have a huge impact on the Northeast if it wants.
What geographical location is
Eight Northeast states of the country are connected to a narrow place in Siliguri, West Bengal. This passage with a width of about 22 kilometers and 60 km length is also called chicken neck many times due to narrowness. Eight states which connect with the rest of the country through this route are Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. The 22 km wide route connects Northeastern states to the rest of the country, it is considered quite sensitive. Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh are adjacent to the neighborhood of this corridor. Also, China also has access to Tibet on total kilometers.
If this route has a slight effect on this route 22 km wide, then the whole country can be threatened. This is the reason that the Siliguri Corridor has got strong security.
When did China’s aggression
During the Indo-China War in the sixties, the Chinese army highlighted the sensitivity of the Siliguri Corridor, moving rapidly in Arunachal Pradesh. Although China did not directly attack this corridor, but by moving ahead, it definitely understood that if the intention of China gets upset, then this area can be a soft target of the country.
In the year 2017, China expressed his intention to build a road in Doklam area of Bhutan. This is near the Siliguri Corridor. India objected to this and tried to stop Chinese activities, which led to a military deadlock between the two which lasted for more than two months.
Due to geographical location, there is a single railway line, which connects everyone to each other. With this, the Northeast continued to get essential things. Apart from chicken neck, several routes were made to connect the Northeast through Bangladesh, in which the necessary trade started through the Chittagong port. Now the suggestions are coming between Younis’s non-frost behavior that the country will have to leave the dependence on Dhaka completely.
Controversial statements were made even before the Bangladesh leader about chicken neck.
JNU student Sharjil Imam said in a speech in the year 2020 that if 5 lakh people are also found, Assam can be cut permanently or for at least one month from India. In a way, Sharjil had threatened to separate the Northeast from the country, after which he was arrested on charges of treason.
What can be the option
There is also talk of preparing an option after Younus’s comment. In this episode, BJP leader Pradyot Kishore Debbarma said that India will have to break Bangladesh to reach Chittagong directly. This comment is against Younis’s landlock statement. Debbarma said that the Chittagong port left the country in the country in 1947, while the hill people of this area are believed to be a part of India. There are tribes such as Garo, Khasi and Chakma people, who are constantly losing their identity by facing violence.
