Bangladesh Ex-Home Minister: Former Home Minister of Bangladesh Azaaduzzaman Khan Kamal told about the changed circumstances in the country after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government and Mohammad Yunus taking power. Azaaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was the Home Minister in Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh for more than 10 years, gave an interview to The Indian Express.
In an interview, senior Awami League leader Kamal said, “In Bangladesh, their government was overthrown by the army and fundamentalists together.” He appealed to Mohammad Yunus to step down from the post and hold elections as soon as possible for the better future of Bangladesh. Apart from this, Azaduzzama Khan Kamal has appealed for help from India.
‘Army Chief had assured to control the situation’
After massive protests in the student movement in Bangladesh on August 5 last year, Sheikh Hasina’s government fell and she had to flee the country. He said, “There was collusion between the army and the radicals in the incidents that took place between August 3 and 5 last year. Till 4th August I was with Sheikh Hasina. At that time the Army Chief had assured Prime Minister Hasina that he would control the situation in the country. He had also taken the responsibility of protecting the Prime Minister, but everyone has seen what happened on August 5.”
‘I am ready to return to Bangladesh, India should help’
The former Home Minister said, “My son and many of my relatives are in jail and 290 murder cases are registered against me too. Surprisingly, in 54 out of 290 cases, the alleged deceased have come back alive. I am ready to go to Bangladesh, provided the rule of law is established in the country and the courts conduct fair trials.”
He said, “I have been a freedom fighter, I know what India did for Bangladesh in 1971. India stood with Bangladesh at every step. Always helped Bangladesh. India can still help us diplomatically. Our courts have become paralyzed. Awami League lawyers are not being allowed to enter the courts. Therefore, India should put diplomatic pressure so that the courts in Bangladesh start functioning legally and India can help us for this.”
