The Supreme Court on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) directed Bihar Director General of Police and Delhi Police Commissioner to provide adequate protection to the minor girl seeking to cancel their marriage.
Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan and a bench of Justice Manmohan said that the girl and her friend are in danger to their lives and the officers should contact them and provide necessary help.
The girl, who was absconding with the friend, claimed that on December 9, 2024, she was forcibly married at the age of 16 and a half and now the husband and in -laws are forcing her to perform this marriage. The husband was 32-33 years old at the time of marriage.
The bench agreed to hear the petition and directed the Bihar administration, the girl’s husband and in -laws to reply by July 15. The girl said in the petition that her in-laws did not allow the parents to return home and claimed that they have given a lot of money for marriage and spent.
The girl said that the in-laws repeatedly told her that they want a child. The girl claimed that she wanted to study further, but the father-in-law put her in captivity despite allowing her to go back to her parents.
The petition stated, ‘Current writ petition … 16 -year -old minor has been filed by the petitioner, who is in danger of life due to protesting against being forced in child marriage against the will. The minor claimed that she has run away with a friend of her and she is afraid that if she returns to Bihar, her life may be in danger.
The petitioner has requested the Supreme Court to end his marriage. Her husband is a civil contractor and the husband says that the parents of the petitioner are her borrowers, so the girl will have to continue this marriage. The petitioner has demanded ending marriage and prosecution against in -laws and husbands under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 2006.
