The night of 25 June 1975 when India’s democracy shocked. On this day the Constitution was crushed, freedom of expression was suppressed and democracy was held in chains. The emergency was announced by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on the radio at midnight.

Movement under the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan
Under the leadership of socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan in the country, the movement against corruption and inflation was intensifying. The Allahabad High Court had canceled Indira’s Lok Sabha membership, which threatened her chair. The voice of leaders like Jayaprakash Narayan was uniting the public. In such a situation, the Emergency became a weapon which took democracy hostage. Amidst this tension, Indira Gandhi announced an emergency under Article 352 of the Constitution. This decision was taken overnight without cabinet approval. President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed signed it at midnight and the country drowned in the darkness of Emergency.

Suspension of fundamental rights of citizens
The fundamental rights of citizens were suspended during the Emergency. The freedom to speak was taken away. The censorship was locked on the press. Every news published in the newspapers had to take the approval of the government sensor. Many journalists were arrested and locks were given locks at the offices of newspapers. People craved to know the truth. There is a famous story of that time that some newspapers left their editorial pages empty against the censorship.

Many big leaders lodged in jail overnight
Opposition leaders Jayaprakash Narayan, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, George Fernandes were imprisoned overnight. The jails were so filled that the place started falling short. Journalists, writers and even artists were not spared. All the famous celebrities of that time had to become a victim of oppression and had to bear the brunt of emergency. Emergency reached the village. Emergency was not only against criminals, but against every voice that used to ask power. Against this dictatorial attitude of Indira Gandhi, slogans of restoration of democracy were raised at the street, street, square-intersection.

Emergency lasted for 21 months
The emergency, which lasted for 21 months, ended on 21 March 1977, when Indira Gandhi announced the election. Perhaps he was confident that the public was with him. But, in the 1977 elections, the public defeated the Congress. The Janata Party government was formed. This victory contributed millions of people who suffered torture in jails, demonstrated on the streets and raised their voice. The public ousted Indira Gandhi’s government from power and the Janata Party government was formed under the leadership of Morarji Desai.
