‘BJP-Rss attacking Ladakh’s culture’, Rahul Gandhi said on the arrest of Sonam Wangchuk


Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday (September 28, 2025) alleged that the people of Ladakh, culture and traditions are being attacked by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and RSS. He also advocated to include Ladakh in the sixth schedule. Gandhi’s remarks have come in view of the violence in Leh.

Four people were killed and several others were injured in the firing of security forces in the violence in Leh on Wednesday. Since then, 50 people have been detained on charges of involvement in riots. Sonam Wangchuk, a climate activist demanding state status to Ladakh, has been detained under the National Security Act (Rasuka) and has been kept in Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan.

Curfew on the fifth day in Ladakh

Gandhi said in a post on ‘X’, ‘BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) are attacking the wonderful people of Ladakh, culture and traditions.’ The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said, ‘People of Ladakh raised their voice. The BJP responded by taking the lives of four youths and putting Sonam Wangchuk in jail. Stop murder, stop violence, stop threatening. He said, ‘Give voice to Ladakh, give them the sixth schedule.’

Officials said that the violence affected Leh continued curfew for the fifth consecutive day on Sunday and Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta will hold a security review meeting to make a decision to relax the sanctions. There was a violent clash between protesters and security forces on Wednesday during a bandh called by ‘Leh Apex Body’ (LAB) to pursue the conversation with the Center on the issue of state status and expansion of the sixth schedule in Ladakh. Curfew in Leh was relaxed for four hours on Saturday.

Sonam Wangchuk’s arrest under NSA

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has been arrested on Friday (September 26, 2025) under the Strict National Security Act (NSA). This action took place two days after violent protests on the demand for state status and constitutional protection to Ladakh, in which 4 people were killed and 90 were injured in the Union Territory.

The police have sent Wangchuk out of Ladakh, while the Ladakh administration cut all mobile internet connections under the jurisdiction of Leh district as a precautionary step. Wangchuk’s arrest suddenly took place in a rapidly changing developments. He was supposed to address a press conference in Leh at 2.30 pm, but was arrested before that.
