On Friday (September 26, 2025) amid unrest in Ladakh, the Internet services were temporarily closed in Leh, a few hours after the climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was arrested by the police. Wangchuk has been arrested under NSA and taken to an unknown place. Wife Geetanjali Angamo has expressed anger over the arrest of Sonam Wangchuk. Gitanjali said, “My husband is being treated like a criminal without any reason.”
What did Geetanjali Angmo say?
Sonam Wangchuk’s wife not only criticized the move after his arrest, but also accused the government of deliberately tarnishing her husband’s image. He said, ‘The government should not fall to such a level that the image of someone who has been performing peacefully for the last five years and who has contributed the most to national pride, whether it is through the Rolls Awards, or the work done in agriculture and environment, or working with institutions like UNDP.’ He further said, ‘If intellectuals and innovators are treated in this way, then God protects this country from anything, except to become a world guru.’
Sonam’s wife also targeted BJP
Gitanjali also targeted the BJP. He said, ‘Please tell them that they should not call themselves Hindu… because the basis of Hinduism is true. Describing himself as a Hindu practitioner, he questioned the policies of the BJP. He said, ‘They are not Hindus in any way. BJP is not a Hinduist because its base is a lie. He also said, ‘I am the person who teaches Vedas, Vedanta and Bhagavad Gita in the light of Shri Aurobindo. I am a teacher and student of Ved and Vedanta. This is not India that Mr. Aurobindo imagined, and it is not Hinduism that Vedas and Vedanta talk.
Challenge of open debate
Angamo reiterated her opposition and challenged the Center to make a live, prime-time television on the charges of FCRA and CBI investigation against her husband.
