Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 4G network of BSNL today (27 September). BSNL 4G is now rolled out on 98 thousand locations across the country. This network is fully prepared on indigenous technology.
As soon as this service is launched, all the telecom operators of India are equipped with 4G. Companies like Jio, Airtel, Vodafone-Idia (VI) are already on 4G and 5G networks.
Also, India has joined select countries that make telecom components for their own use. This technique is made entirely in India and can be upgraded to 5G services in future.
On the 25th anniversary of BSNL, PM Modi inaugurated more than 98 thousand mobile towers from Odisha across the country.
Fast 4G internet will be found everywhere in village and city
- BSNL has developed his own 4G technology, which is not foreign but indigenous. It will be installed at 98,000 places. Meaning, the village-city will get a faster 4G internet everywhere.
This network can be easily upgraded to 5G
This indigenous 4G stack of BSNL can be easily upgraded to 5G. It is a cloud-based and future-ready design. Meaning the software update will shift to 5G. No major hardware changes will be required.
Telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has also said that it is seamlessly upgradable in 5G. That is, 5G will be prepared soon after 4G launch.

New towers will run with solar power
New towers have been facilitated to operate with solar power. It will be India’s largest green telecom network. This step will save energy and will also boost environmental protection. This initiative will strengthen both sustainable development and digital India.
BSNL customers are continuously decreasing
According to the July 2025 data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), BSNL and MTNL are constantly losing subscribers.
In July, 1.01 lakh customers of BSNL were reduced, while MTNL’s subscribers also decreased. Now the market share of public sector telecom companies is less than 8%.
According to the report, Jio has added the highest 4.83 lakh new mobile customers in July. Airtel added 4.64 lakh new mobile users in July.
While the subscribers of Vodafone Idea have seen a decline. Vodafone Idea (VI) has reduced 3.59 lakh mobile customers in July.
BSNL far behind Airtel and Jio
PM Modi has launched the 6G network roadmap. 6G service is expected to start in India by 2030. BSNL is far behind in this case. The company is preparing to launch 5G service with 4G. At the same time, Airtel and Jio launched 5G service in 2022.
Why did BSNL do such a condition?
- After the establishment in 2000, BSNL officials wanted to start mobile service as soon as possible to challenge private operators, but they did not get the necessary approval.
- The period of not getting government consent continued further. Between 2006–12, where the capacity of BSNL increased slightly, private operators went far ahead.
- People left BSNL and turned to private companies due to network congestion. BSNL did not participate in the 3G spectrum auction in 2010 as a government company.
- BSNL also had to pay huge amount for the Wireless Technology broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum. This had a direct impact on the economic condition of BSNL.
- The landline connection declined rapidly as the mobile revolution in the country gained momentum. In 2006-07, BSNL had 3.8 crore landline customers, which remained 1.6 crore in 2014-15.
- BSNL was kept out even when the 4G spectrum was auctioned. Due to this delay, while private companies have rolled out 5G in the country, BSNL got stuck on 4G.
