Canada has recently made major changes in its immigration rules. Under the new immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, which came into effect from 31 January, border officials have been allowed to cancel temporary resident documents such as Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) and Temper Resident Visa (TRV). The new rules will be affected annually thousands of foreign nationals, including a large number of Indians, will have an impact.
This change will affect students, employees and temporary residents, one of which also has a large number of Indians. Canada is a major destination for Indian students to get higher education abroad. According to India’s Foreign Ministry (Mea), about 4,27,000 Indian students are studying in Canada.
Officials can cancel temporary resident documents
The revised rules are in line with the recent changes in the immigration structure of Ottawa, including the cancellation of the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa program at the end of 2024. Under the new rules, Canadian immigration and border officials have the right to cancel ETA, TRV, Work Permit and Study Permit under special circumstances.
As per the revised rules, students’ immigration documents can be canceled when their work or study visa is rejected. This policy also ensures that only immigration and limit officials can cancel these visas, so that any unauthorized intervention can be prevented.
Canada may have to leave if the permit is canceled
According to the report, about 7,000 additional temporary resident visas, work permits and study permits will be canceled as a result of the revised rules. Foreigners, including Indians, whose permits have been canceled, may face many problems including banning or leaving Canada from entering Canada’s ports.
Apart from 4,27,000 students studying in Canada, millions of Indian tourists also reach Canada every year. Between January and July 2024, Canada issued 3,65,750 visitors visas to Indians, which was more than 345,631 released during the same period in 2023.
