The Maharashtra government has challenged the Bombay High Court’s decision in the 2006 serial train blast case in Mumbai in the Supreme Court. The High Court acquitted all the accused in its judgment on Monday, after which questions arose as to who is responsible for the death of more than 180 people. On behalf of the Government of Maharashtra, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta has appealed for an immediate hearing before the Chief Justice’s bench.
The lower court sentenced the accused to death The High Court acquitted all the 12 accused on Monday in the 2006 serial train blast case in Mumbai. The court said that the prosecution ie government lawyers have failed to prove the case against the accused.
The High Court said that it is difficult to assume that the accused have committed the crime, so they are acquitted. If they are not wanted in any other case, they should be released from jail immediately.
Following the court order, two of the 12 accused were released from Nagpur Central Jail on Monday evening. These include Ehtesham Siddiqui, who was sentenced to death in the case by a lower court in 2015.
The second accused, Mohammad Ali, was serving a sentence of life imprisonment. An official said that Naveed Khan, one of the 12 people, will still remain in Nagpur jail as he is a prisoner under consideration in a case of attempt to murder.
