According to Shiva Purana, Prajapati Daksha was looking for a worthy groom for his daughter Sati. But, Mother Sati went against her father and chose Lord Shiva as her husband. Daksha was very angry with this. Then, after some time Prajapati Daksha organized a big yagya (havan), but did not deliberately invite Lord Shiva in it. When Mother Sati came to know about this, she felt very sad and angry. He did not tolerate this insult and gave up his life at the place of sacrifice.
Lord Shiva became very sad and angry with the death of Mother Sati. He punished Prajapati Daksha, but later forgive him and gave him life. Nevertheless, Lord Shiva became so sad in memory of Mother Sati that he kept roaming around the universe with her body. Then Lord Vishnu divided the body of Mother Sati into 108 pieces from her Sudarshan Chakra to handle the situation. Of these, 51 pieces fell on the earth and in other worlds. Wherever the limbs of Mother Sati fell, there are temples of Goddess who are called Shakti Peeth. Every Shakti Peeth is dedicated to a different form of Goddess.
