In the Civil Aviation Conference of the Central Government, the Chandigarh administration has strongly demanded the status of ‘Point of Call’ to Chandigarh International Airport. The purpose of this is that foreign airlines can get permission to start direct international flights from here.

Senior officials including UT Chief Secretary Rajiv Verma attended the meeting. Officials said that the number of international travel from Punjab, Haryana and surrounding states has increased considerably, but the facility of foreign flights is still very limited.
If the airport gets the status of ‘Point of Call’, then the way for direct flights from Chandigarh to many parts of the world will open.
So point of call status is necessary
‘Point of Call’ is the status under which foreign airlines are allowed to start direct international flights from an airport under the Bilateral Air Service Agreement. Getting this status to Chandigarh Airport will benefit thousands of passengers in the area and their dependence on Delhi Airport will also be reduced.
Officials also suggested that the old terminal of the airport, which falls under the Chandigarh jurisdiction and is currently unused, should also be restored. This will help in handling international flights and increasing pressure of passengers and will not require new construction.

An official said that the MPs of the region have also raised this issue in the Lok Sabha many times. He insisted that “direct connectivity for international destinations has now become a requirement, not only demand.”
At the moment, the central government has been saying that the introduction of new international routes depends on the interest of aviation companies. Now all eyes are on the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which has been appealed to develop Chandigarh as an international aviation center.
