China Pakistan Bangladesh Relations: China hosted a tripartite meeting with Pakistan and Bangladesh for the first time in history on Thursday (June 19, 2025). This meeting was held in Kunming city of Yunnan province and is considered an important development in regional politics.

According to experts, this meeting has taken place at a time when instability in relations between India and Bangladesh is being seen. For this reason, this initiative is being considered strategically and diplomatically important from the point of view of India. The meeting was attended by Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Sun Vedong, Bangladesh acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddiqui, Additional Secretary of Asia-Pacific Department of Pakistan, Imran Ahmed Siddiqui and Pakistan Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch.

What happened between China, Pakistan and Bangladesh?

In the recent first tripartite meeting between China, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the three countries have agreed to increase trade, investment, health, education, maritime cooperation and regional connectivity. According to China’s Foreign Ministry, it was also decided in the meeting that a special work group would be formed to implement these consent.

China has described it as an initiative promoting and also clarified that this cooperation is not against any third country. However, in India’s eyes, this development is worrying and strategically important. India is concerned about the changing relationship between Pakistan and Bangladesh. The relations between the two countries remained cold during the tenure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, but since August 2023, when the interim government came to Bangladesh, Pakistan has started improving relations at the level of defense, trade and diplomacy rapidly.

It is also believed that Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI and the army played an important role behind the scenes in farewell to Sheikh Hasina’s power. After this incident, China, which was earlier keeping a short distance, has now become active again through an economic partnership with the interim government.

Why did India worry about India?

This trilateral cooperation of China, Pakistan and Bangladesh is considered a direct challenge for India’s Neberhood First Policy and its impact in the field. Especially when Pakistan has sent two ships from the Chittagong port since November 2023, which is being seen as a strategy to weaken the presence in the Bay of Bengal of India. Bangladesh is not just a neighbor for India, but an important lifeline for Northeast India. Therefore, these developments are being considered as a matter of strategic concern of India.
