The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered that the students of West Bengal, where the student union elections are pending, should be kept closed. The court, prohibiting all kinds of entertaining activities inside the students’ union chambers, directed that these rooms can be used for official purposes, if extremely necessary, then it can be done only after written permission from the registrar of the university or the Principal of the institute concerned.
A bench headed by Justice Saumen Sen came during the hearing of the gang rape case "Text-Align: justify;"> Calcutta Law College Students’ Union will not apply to the union room.
The bench, however, clarified that the order allowing the use of such rooms in special circumstances will not apply to the student union room of South Calcutta Law College, which is currently sealed for investigation.
In Law College, an alleged allegation of alleged to harass the woman is on an alumnus named Monojit Mishra, who has been arrested. Two senior college students Jab Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee have also been accused of supporting Mishra in crime.
The victim said in Tahrir to the police that this crime lasted for more than three hours in many places inside the premises. The student union room was also included in these places. Currently, the investigation is being done by the Steering Department of Kolkata Police.
Elections have not been held for a long time. At least two petitions requesting to direct the State Education Department to hold the students’ union elections are pending in the Calcutta High Court. The court on Thursday directed the state government to file an affidavit on its plan to hold pending elections. The next hearing of the case will be on July 17.
