Congress MP Shashi Tharoor visited 5 countries Gayana, Panama, Columbia, Brazil and America to clarify India’s Operation Sindoor on the international stage after the Pahalgam terror attack of April 2025.
Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that his article about Operation Sindoor is not a sign of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s joining the BJP, but a statement of national unity, interest and standing for India.
In an article published in The Hindu on Monday, Tharoor wrote that Modi’s energy, mobility and desire to join remain a major property for India on the global stage, but it should get more support.
This article was seen as a growing rift in his relationship with Tharoor’s Congress party and his leadership.
However, the Congress opposed Tharoor’s statement saying that it could be their personal opinion, not the whole party.
While discussing with the media in Moscow, MP Shashi Tharoor said on the praise of Operation Sindoor and PM Modi, “I said this because the Prime Minister himself has shown mobility and energy in the conversation with other countries. He has traveled more countries than any Prime Minister and he has done this to take India’s message worldwide.”
Big things about Tharoor’s statement …
- I returned to India after 25 years of service to the United Nations. I did this to serve India and I am very proud to get an opportunity to do so.
- I have also believed for a long time that political differences in our democracy should stop on boundaries. For us, there is no such thing as BJP’s foreign policy or Congress’s foreign policy, only Indian foreign policy and Indian national interest.
- I am not saying anything new, I said this many years ago. And I said this for the first time on the record when I became the chairman of the Committee of Foreign Affairs in 2014.
Congress claims- Modi government’s foreign policy completely failed
Tharoor has praised the Prime Minister at a time when the Congress is constantly attacking the Modi government on its foreign policy. The Congress alleges that the Indian diplomacy is shattering and the country is isolated globally.
At the same time, since the Pahalgam attack, Tharoor has been making comments on the India-Pakistan struggle and diplomatic access which are different from the Congress’ stance.
Congress spokesperson Supriya Srinet claimed that issuing advisory for its citizens traveling to India of America maligns the country.
The Congress demanded that the government should register its protest and also take a tough stand. He also claimed that the foreign policy of the Modi government has completely failed.
