Congress MP from Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, Congress MP Kishori Lal Sharma has filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding uploading Form 17C on the Election Commission website. The petition states that making this form public with complete voting information in every center will bring transparency in the election process.
Polling officers fill Form 17C under Conduct of Election Rules, 1961. In this, information like the total number of voters, details of gender, voting percentage is recorded. The petition said that due to the information recorded in this form, people will be able to get the facility of matching the total votes counted in EVM.
Along with Kishori Lal Sharma, Congress leaders Alok Sharma and Priya Mishra are also co-petitioners in the case. Keep in mind that Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have already filed a petition on this demand. The Election Commission has been arguing that a copy of Form 17C is given to the polling agent of every party. The demand to upload Form 17C of each booth on the website is not practical.
In the midst of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the petitions of Mahua Moitra and ADR were engaged for hearing. Then the Supreme Court postponed the hearing. The court’s vacation bench had said that such an order cannot be given suddenly in the middle of the election. Detailed hearing is necessary for this.
