IT veteran company Microsoft has officially covered its business with Pakistan. The condition there is so bad that the company which started the operation in March 2000 and spread from computer to technozoli across the country, has now finished its operation after 25 years.
Although a formal announcement has not been made by the Tech veteran firm, but it has been confirmed by Jawad Rahman. He is the executive officer of this company in Pakistan, who first established the presence of Microsoft in the country.
Rahman wrote in the LinkedIn post, ‘Today I came to know that Microsoft is officially stopping its operations in Pakistan. Some of the remaining employees have been formally informed and just a similar era came to an end. He indicated the end of the era in which the company contributed significantly to the digital perspective of Pakistan.
Why did the company collect its business from Pakistan?
Microsoft has not publicly explained its reasons for closing the business, but this decision is widely being held responsible for Pakistan’s deteriorating political and economic environment. That is, due to the economic condition of Pakistan, the company has decided to cover its business. Experts say that continuous governance changes, heavy tax, currency fluctuations and increasing challenges in technology imports have emerged as a big challenge for foreign companies.
Threat to Pakistan’s future
By the end of FY 2024, Pakistan’s trade deficit had increased by US $ 24.4 billion, while the foreign exchange reserves declined by June 2025 to only 11.5 billion US $. Pakistan’s economic condition with such a low foreign exchange has worsened and importing any kind of technology can lead to a major economic crisis. This move of Microsoft has also created fear of investment in the country. Now any company will consider many times before establishing its business here, which has increased the threat to Pakistan’s future.

Reacting to this move of Microsoft, former President Dr. Arif Alvi described the exit of Microsoft as a ‘worrying sign’ for the country’s economic future. In a post on social media platform X, Alvi expressed grief over the increasing unemployment, talent migration in Pakistan. Alvi said, “Pakistan is now getting trapped in the vortex of uncertainty. Economic reforms seem like a far -reaching and elusive dream.
Microsoft promoted Digital in Pakistan
In the last two decades, Microsoft has played an important role in shaping Pakistan’s technology infrastructure. It participated with educational institutions, started computer lab in disadvantaged areas and has supported digital literacy and business across the country. Considering the widespread social impact of the company, Jawad Rahman said, “We tried to give real opportunities to Pakistani youth.”
