In 2013, the year old party got 29% votes, reached 54% in 2 years
In 2012, the foundation of the Aam Aadmi Party was laid on Gandhi Jayanti i.e. 2 October. It was held exactly 1 year 1 month and 2 days later on December 4, 2013, Delhi Assembly elections were held. When the results came on December 8, AAP won 28 seats with 29.49% of the votes.
Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal defeated the then Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dixit by nearly 26 thousand votes in his New Delhi seat. Kejriwal got 53.8% votes, while three -time Chief Minister Sheila Dixit got only 22.4% votes.
BJP’s 5% votes increased in 7 years, seats decreased from 31 to 8
BJP became the largest party in the December 2013 assembly elections, but 5 seats behind the majority. BJP won 31 seats. The AAP formed the government with the support of the Congress, but fell in 2 months. There was President’s rule in Delhi almost a year.
When elections were held in 2015, BJP’s vote share decreased only by 0.88%, but only so much of the party lost 28 seats. The party won only 3 seats. In the 2020 election compared to 2013, BJP’s vote share rose 5.44% to 38.51%, yet the party could win only 8 seats.
Congress came from 24% to 4% in 7 years, account not even open from 2 times
The Congress, which won three consecutive assembly elections from 1998 to 2013, could not open an account in the 2015 elections. The party got only 9.65% votes. Whereas, in 2013, the Congress won 8 seats with 24.55% votes. The party’s misery did not stop here in Delhi. In 2020, the vote fell to 4.26% and the party again was reduced to zero.
