Meanwhile, PS Cyber Team of West Delhi Police arrested a person doing cyber extortion, who claimed to be a freelancer of a US-based company. He used a virtual international mobile number and fake ID to create profiles on Bumble, Snapchat and other social media platforms.
Women aged 18-30 years were targeted
DCP of West Delhi said that the accused targeted women aged 18-30 years by creating fake profiles on social media. Once connected on the social platform, the accused used to blackmail women by sending objectionable pictures and videos to extort money. Police recovered a mobile, app-based virtual international mobile number and 13 credit cards from the accused.
More than 700 women cheated
The name of the accused is Tushar Singh Bisht (23 years), who was arrested on Friday (January 3, 2025) from Shakarpur area on charges of duping more than 700 women by posing as models on dating platforms. Tushar introduced himself on the dating app as a US-based freelance model visiting India. Once the accused won the trust of the women, under the guise of friendship, he would ask for their phone numbers and objectionable pictures and videos and surreptitiously save them.
How did the accused blackmail?
Police said that initially the accused did not do anything, but gradually he started extorting money by blackmailing. If a victim refused to pay money, the accused would threaten to upload her visuals online or sell them on the dark web. Police said that Tushar had contacted more than 500 women on Bumble and more than 200 women on Snapchat and WhatsApp.
Police said that the accused was exposed when the Delhi University student lodged a complaint at the Cyber Police Station on December 3, 2024. She connected with Tushar on Bumble in January 2024. There the two became friends, which later turned into private chats on WhatsApp and Snapchat. During this time the victim shared personal photos and videos with him.
How was the accused caught?
Whenever the victim asked to meet Tushar, he used to make some excuse or the other. A few days later, the accused sent an objectionable video of the victim to her phone and demanded money. Out of fear, the student gave him a small amount of money, but when Tushar started harassing her continuously, the student told everything to her family and registered a case with the police.
Police also recovered more than 60 WhatsApp chat records with women from Delhi and surrounding areas from Tushar’s phone. Initial investigation has revealed that apart from the complainant, Tushar had also extorted money from at least four other women in a similar manner.
