Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Tuesday alleged that the religious committee has decided to demolish several temples and Buddhist places of worship in the capital. He has written a letter to Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinay Kumar Saxena against this decision.
Atishi said these structures include many temples and Buddhist places of worship, which are highly revered by the Dalit community. Breaking these will hurt the sentiments of the Dalit community. I request you not to demolish these sites. However, the LG office has rejected these allegations.
2 important points of Atishi’s letter…
- I am told that the Religious Committee, in a meeting on 22 November 2024, has ordered the demolition of many religious structures across Delhi. Till last year, the decision of the religious committee used to go to the LG through Delhi CM, but this time the process was not followed properly.
- In an order issued last year, the LG office had said that demolition of religious structures is a matter related to public order and does not fall within the purview of the elected government. This will be directly under the purview of the Lieutenant Governor. Since then the work of the Religious Committee is being directly supervised by you. Demolition of these structures will hurt the religious sentiments of many communities. Therefore, I request you not to demolish any temple or place of worship.
Atishi mentioned many religious places in the letter The temples and religious structures that Atishi has talked about in the letter to the LG include a temple located in Nala Market of West Patel Nagar, a temple located in Dilshad Garden, a statue located in Sunder Nagari, a temple located in Seema Puri, Gokal Puri. Temples located in, include the temples located next to New Osmanpur MCD Flats.
LG had told Atishi- Kejriwal called you a makeshift CM, I am hurt. Earlier on Monday, LG VK Saxena had written a letter to Chief Minister Atishi congratulating him for the New Year. He had written that for the first time in his two and a half year tenure, he saw the Chief Minister working. Before you, CM (Arvind Kejriwal) did not have a single department, whereas you are handling the responsibility of many departments.
LG had written that a few days ago former CM Arvind Kejriwal publicly called you a temporary and makeshift Chief Minister. I find this very offensive and I am hurt by it. This is an insult not only to you but also to me as the President of India and her representative who appointed you.
On LG’s letter, CM Atishi had said – Instead of doing dirty politics, you should focus on the betterment of Delhi. Arvind Kejriwal ji worked for the betterment of Delhi for nine and a half years. I am running the government on the path shown by Arvind Kejriwal ji.

Wrote a letter to Kejriwal a week ago On December 22, LG had shared a video raising questions on filth and mismanagement in many areas of Delhi.
On this, AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal thanked the LG and said that he should point out our shortcomings, we will remove all the shortcomings.
The next day, Kejriwal informed in his X post that the cleaning work has started in the areas. Taking a dig at this, LG had written a letter to Kejriwal.
LG had written that I would have been happy, if attention was also paid to those schools where children of two classes have to sit and study in one room. The arrangements for Mohalla Clinic would also have been improved.
In the last two and a half years, I told you many times about the problems of the people of Delhi, but till date no work has been done on them.
I will also hold you responsible for the increasing pollution in Yamuna, because it was you who had filed a petition in the Supreme Court to stop the cleaning work of Yamuna.
I request you to come out on the streets yourself and take stock of the situation.
