Delimitation: Till now, differences were seen between the Center and the Tamil Nadu government on the issue of delimitation, but now the rhetoric is happening in such a way that there is an attempt to create a gap between North and South India. Senior minister Durai Murugan’s recent statement in the Tamil Nadu government is an example of this effort.
Durai Muraugan said on Thursday that Dravidian culture (South India, especially Tamil Nadu) is better than the culture of North India. Addressing a public meeting, he said that unlike the Tamil customs, North Indian traditions support things like polygamy. The minister said that North Indian culture allows a woman to marry 5 or 10 men, while this is not the case in Tamil culture. This comment of Murugan is being seen as a reference to the marriage of five Pandavas of Draupadi in Mahabharata.
Murugan said, ‘In our culture, a man marries a woman, but in North India a woman can marry 5 or 10 men. Five men also marry a woman. This is their culture. If one goes there, the other will come.
‘There is no work other than having children’
Murugan did not stay here. He further said, ‘Those who rule at the center asked us to control the population. We did the same then. Our population decreased but the population in North India did not decrease. He produced 17, 18, 19 children. They have no other work.
South Indian states are scared of delimitation
Murugan’s remarks came talking about delimitation. The Tamil Nadu government is against delimitation. This is because if there is delimitation, the representation of many South Indian states including Tamil Nadu will decrease in Parliament according to the population, while the representation of North India will increase. There is a possibility of delimitation after the year 2026. In this process, the Lok Sabha seats of the states will be distributed according to the population.
