The ethnic militant groups of Meeti and Cookie communities of Manipur are converting their weapons and are converting into sniper rifles to juggle them to increase their firepower. Many of these weapons were looted from police arms in 2023, the authorities gave this information on Sunday (July 14, 2025).
He said that these weapons were converted into sniper rifle to target the opposing communities. More than 6,000 weapons looted from police weapons included .303 rifles, AK Assault Rifles and INSAS rifles and carbines.
Security forces seized arms before attack
Officials said that the standards of standard .303 rifle are about 500 meters. After changing the gun button and applying special telescopes with other specialties, the pill fired from the same rifle can go to more distance with greater accuracy and firepower. AK-47 is the most effective in only 300-400 meters.
These changes show that these groups wanted to ambush the attack from long distance, but before they could present a new challenge for the security forces, the police along with the Assam Rifles and other semi -regional forces confiscated these weapons from various districts of the Imphal Valley and the mountainous region.
Many dangerous weapons recovered
In June, the Manipur Police and other security forces recovered 328 weapons from the Meti -plural militant groups during a simultaneous campaign in five districts of the Imphal Valley on the midnight of 13 and 14 June and recovered 203 weapons from four districts of the mountainous areas in the first week of July, where cookie militant groups dominate.
Weapons recovered from both these raids include INSAS rifle, AK series rifle, self -loading rifle, converted sniper rifle, grenade launcher, pistol and native 0.22 rifle.
260 people have lost their lives in violence
Soon after the clashes between the two communities started in 2023, security agencies had seized guns made from uprooted electric poles or parts of the Galvanized Iron Pipes. Since the onset of violence, 260 people have lost their lives. After taking violent forms of clashes in June 2023, people from the hill district, who are traditionally hunters and are able to make deadly weapons, uprooted some electric poles and water pipes.
This community traditionally used swords, spears, bows and arrows. Later, he started using ‘Majal Gun’ and bullets, also known as ‘Thihanang’. Uprooted electric poles were used to make indigenous cannons, also known as ‘pampi’ or ‘bumpy’, in which iron pieces and other metal pieces are filled. They act as a bullet or shrapnel.
Village blacksmiths prepare weapons
Officials said that they make the blacksmiths of the village, which are also called ‘Thih-Kheng Pa’, who often provide free service to protect their community. The mountain community is also known for guerrilla warfare techniques and often attacks people coming near to protect themselves or attack them by rolling large stones on steep slopes and ambush them.
