The doctors saved his life by removing an 8 -centimeter metal spoon trapped in the intestine of a 30 -year -old man from just 30 minutes of endoscopy process. This rare and surprising case is a great example of medical emergency, in which the speed and expertise of doctors gave the patient a new life.
How did the matter be revealed?
The patient was referred to the Emergency Department of Fortis Shalimar Bagh after an initial investigation at a multi-specialty hospital in North Delhi. The patient complained of severe abdominal pain and not digesting food. On reaching the hospital, doctors immediately performed X-rays and diagnostic imaging in which the shocking truth was revealed. Investigation found that an 8-centimeter metal spoon was stuck in the upper part of the patient’s small intestine.
HOD and Senior Director of Gastroenterology at Fortis Hospital, Dr. Ramesh Garg said that this was a very unusual and challenging case. It is dangerous to get stuck in the intestine of a spoonful of metal as it can damage the intestine or cause serious infections. Timely correct diagnosis and quick action saved the patient’s life.
Showed amazing in 30 minutes
The team of doctors led by Dr. Ramesh Garg immediately took action. Emergency Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy was done by giving anesthesia to the patient. In this process, a thin, flexible tube (endoscope) was used which had camera and light. The surgical team carefully removed the spoon from the intestine with the help of Foucasp, that too without any internal injury. It is being told that this whole process took just 30 minutes.
After the procedure, the patient was kept under surveillance for 24 hours. His condition is completely stable and the next day he was discharged in a healthy state. Dr. Ramesh Garg said that if the spoon was not extracted on time, it could have caused holes in the intestine or serious infection. Our multi-disciplinary team worked with full accuracy, which did not cause any problem to the patient. He further said that such cases reflect the importance of immediate decisions and advanced technology in medical emergency.
Significantly, it was not clear to the doctors how the patient swallowed the spoon, but the doctors estimates that it may have happened inadvertently or while sleeping. Such cases are often related to mental health problems or inadvertently swallowing anything. Earlier, in Fortis, a live cockroach of 3 centimeters was taken out from the intestine of a 23 -year -old man, which was done by eating street food.
