Before DRG, there used to be a small team for Naxal operation in different districts of Bastar. Their number was 50 to 60 and 100 to 150. Before 2015, this team was called ‘Crack Team’ in Bastar district.
In Kanker, ‘E-30’, while the soldiers of Sukma, Dantewada and Bijapur used to call themselves ‘commandos’.
DRG name raised from Narayanpur for the first time
The soldiers going to the Naxal operation of Narayanpur district started calling themselves DRG i.e. District Reserve Guard. This name was quite attractive. The team of each district may have different names, but everyone’s purpose was only one- ‘Naxal operation’.
Therefore, in 2015, the police department and the then government named the team going on a Naxal operation in all the seven districts of Bastar officially named ‘DRG’.

New recruitment was done, Sardard Naxalites were also taken
Even before 2015, this team had a surrender Naxalite. Naxalites surrendered during Salwa Judum were also kept in it. At the same time, new recruits were started in every district to expand DRG after 2015.
At present, 60 percent of direct recruitment personnel in each district are, while 40 percent are Sarndard Naxalites. At present, hundreds of soldiers are deployed in the seven districts of the division. In terms of security, we are not telling the number of DRGs.

DRG provides for the recruitment of local youth only. Most of the boys from the interior area have been admitted. DRG soldiers martyred in these attacks
- In the year 2020, Naxalites implicated the soldiers who had gone on an operation in Minapa in Sukma district, in which 17 soldiers were martyred.
- In April 2023, a storm vehicle filled with DRG jawans returning from Naxal operation was blasted by Naxalites between Aranpur-Sheli. 10 DRG jawans and 1 driver were martyred in this incident.
- In January 2025, the Scorpio vehicle filled with DRG jawans returning from Naxal operation was blasted by Naxalites near Ambeli on Kutru-Bedre Marg. In this incident, 1 driver, including 8 DRG jawans, was martyred.
