Du History Honors Curriculum Change: It was proposed to include Manusmriti and Tuzuk-e-Babri (Babarnama) in the History Honors course of Delhi University (DU). The change was made for the seventh semester of the four -year graduate program (FYUP). As soon as this proposal came out, protest started in the university. A section of students and teachers demanded the removal of this change as objectionable.
Students and teachers said that inclusion of these texts in the syllabus is like creating a new controversy in the name of history. Many teachers described it as a wanderer for the basic purpose of studies and requested the university administration to reconsider this proposal. Some students described it as promoting unilateral ideology, while some said that study of different texts is necessary for the overall understanding of history.
What did the DU administration say?
Amid opposition from students and teachers, the administration of Delhi University gave its official statement on this issue. University Registrar Professor Vikas Gupta said in an exclusive conversation with ABP News, ‘Neither will we teach Babarnama nor teach Manusmriti. We have not yet come to this proposal and will not be passed in the Academic Council (AC) and Executive Council (EC).
He further said that the university should not fall into such controversial things and strict action will be taken by any teacher to forcefully implement such changes in the syllabus.
Priority to give students comprehensive and balanced education
The DU administration also made it clear that the purpose of the university is to provide a comprehensive and balanced education to the students. Therefore, any new subject or book will be added only when it will be useful in terms of teaching and research. The university, while trying to end the issue, reiterated that it does not want to get caught in any political or ideological dispute.
