The Election Commission (ECI) will hold a press conference at 3 pm on Sunday (August 17) amidst the continuous opposition from opposition parties over the allegations of voter list in Bihar and the special intensive revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar. This press conference will be held at the National Media Center in New Delhi.
Apart from the announcement of the election schedule, it is an unusual thing in itself to formally call a press conference on behalf of the Election Commission on any other issue. Although the theme of the Election Commission’s press conference has not been clarified yet, the commission officials have said that it is related to the allegations against the Election Commission. Explain that this will be the first press conference of the Election Commission after the commencement of the special intensive revision (SIR) process in Bihar.
Rahul Gandhi and opposition have accused the Election Commission
Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly accused the Election Commission of manipulating the voter-related data. He has said that votes have been stolen in elections held in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Haryana. Apart from this, the Election Commission is also being accused of cutting the names of people from the voter list under the SIR process in Bihar on behalf of the opposition parties.
Commission sought an affidavit regarding Rahul Gandhi’s claims
The ECI has asked the Congress leader to present the names of those people, who claims that they have been incorrectly added or removed in the voter list. Along with this, a signed manifesto has also been asked to present. The Election Commission has even said that if the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi fails to give an affidavit in support of his allegations, then he will have to apologize.
The Supreme Court amid the opposition’s claim ECI Instructions given to
Opposition parties are also raising questions about the Election Commission’s move for special intensive revision (SIR) of voter list in Bihar. Opposition parties claim that this step will deprive the franchise in the absence of crores of qualified citizens.
The Supreme Court has also asked the Election Commission to publish the details of 65 lakh names removed from the voter list, including the reasons for not including them, to increase transparency in the voter list in Bihar.
