Election Commissioner Vivek Joshi: Haryana Chief Secretary Vivek Joshi has been made the Election Commissioner. This post was vacant due to Gyanesh Kumar being made the Chief Election Commissioner from Election Commissioner. A three -member committee headed by PM Modi approved his name on Monday. Election Commissioner Vivek Joshi and Election Commissioner Sukhbir Singh Sandhu will now take command of the Election Commission along with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in the three -member panel of the Election Commission.
Vivek Joshi is the IAS officer of the 1989 Haryana cadre. He was made the Chief Secretary of Haryana three months ago. Earlier, he was on central deputation. On the request of the Haryana government, the Center sent him back to his original cadre i.e. Haryana.
He was on central deputation since 2019. During this, he first served as Secretary, Department of Financial Services in the Ministry of Home Affairs and General Registrar of India and Census Commissioner. After this, he became the Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Training in the Ministry of Central Personnel, Public Grievance and Pensioners.

Prior to Central Deputation, he held various positions in the Government of Haryana from 2017 to January 2019. During this time he was also the Commissioner of Ambala Division, Principal Resident Commissioner (New Delhi) and CEO of Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority. Joshi also remained in the Central Government from 2010 to 2017 and worked as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Women and Child Development.
Graduate from IIT Roorkee
Vivek Joshi is a resident of Prayagraj. He earned a mechanical engineering degree from IIT Roorkee. He then completed his PhD in International Economics from Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva, Switzerland. In the year 1989, he joined civil services. He received the first posting of his career in 1991 as a sub-district officer in Gohana, Haryana. In 2001, he was sent on Central Deputation for the first time in 2001 after assuming separate posts in the state.
Vivek Joshi served in his nearly 34 -year tenure in the Haryana government and the central government for 18 years. He is scheduled to retire on 31 May 2026.
