Bhaskar: How long has your team been here? Doctor : Our team is here since 13th February. Even when tear gas shells were fired on 14th February, our team was here. On 21st February, when farmer Shubhakaran was shot in the head, I was the one who took him to the ambulance.
Bhaskar: How is Dallewal checkup done? Doctor: We do his medical checkup every 6 hours. Let’s check their weight. We were checking until his weight dropped by 12 kg. Since then, he has not been able to stand properly and hence could not do the examination thereafter.
Bhaskar: Dallewal is on fast unto death for 40 days (till January 4), what was the effect on his body? Doctor : His ketone body level has increased significantly. This shows that the body has started eating the body. If we understand in medical language, if a person does not eat anything for 7 days then the body starts eating fat from the body. After fat goes away, muscle mass starts eating. Now his muscle mass is breaking down. Now the bones of his body are in such a condition that they are left intact. His health has gone down so much.
Bhaskar: Which part of Dallewal’s body is being affected the most? Doctor: Listen to me, he has an elderly body. Muscle mass has been lost, it will not recover at the age of 70. Even after breaking the fast, there will be no recovery of muscle mass because of his age.
Bhaskar: How much is his kidney and heart being affected? Doctor: According to medical science, not eating anything for 7 days can lead to cardiac arrest or silent attack at any time due to electrolyte imbalance. Creatinine in his kidneys is also increasing, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is decreasing, due to which the ability to purify blood is decreasing. Tests also show liver failure. There is also a problem in the lungs. Due to this there are also chances of his multi organ failure.
Bhaskar: When Dallewal ends his fast, which are the parts that will not be recovered? When will he be as healthy as before? Doctor: Dallewal is 70 years old. It is also cold at this time. Now only bones are left in his body. In such a situation, the body will not recover completely. At the same time, their organs will also not be able to function 100% like before. As far as his health is concerned.
Bhaskar: If there is an emergency, how will you handle it? Doctor: Dallewal has clearly told us that even if I die in front of you, do not give me any treatment. Our hands are tied. Our effort is to protect them from the cold. Less people should go to them. They should not have bacterial infection. Punjab government has built its own hospital but we have also made complete preparations.
